Yobe governor visits Damaturu hospital

Yobe State Governor,  Ibrahim Gaidam, on Thursday, September 14, 2017 visited the state Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, to inspect the ongoing work, where his administration spent over N900 million to upgrade infrastructure, facilities and equipment and improve service delivery to patients.

The governor was taken round by Health Commissioner, Dr. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, who said that 13 new clinical wards and complexes, 24 fully furnished housing units and a new administrative block had been completed.

“As a result of Your Excellency’s interventions, service delivery have climbed up as are the number of patients who access clinical services.

“We used to be a 130-bed hospital. We now have around 400 beds. We have 12, 525 outpatient attendance per month; we conduct an average of 300 surgeries monthly since January and we have 2, 514 Accident and Emergency (A & E) attendance.

“Some of the surgeries we conduct are high profile and orthopaedic interventions, such as hip replacement, which were hitherto unavailable here”,  Kawuwa said.

The commissioner further explained that the Gaidam administration’s  recent interventions in the hospital also include the supply of medical equipment to the labour ward and the installation of 200 beds, mattresses, bedside lockers, drip stands and over-bed tables.

He said that the supply of furniture and electronics to some of the other wards recently built within the hospital was at 40 per cent completion stage.

Kawuwa further disclosed that water supply and electricity were now effective and stable in the hospital.

Gaidam expressed appreciation with the progress he had seen at the state Specialist Hospital.

He commended management and staff, including all the doctors and nurses attending to patients for their hard work.

The governor also said that healthcare was an important pillar of his administration’s service compact with the people of the state, adding that he will sustain the tempo to make quality healthcare services accessible and affordable to the people.

The governor added that his administration would build additional staff housing in the hospital in 2018 and asked the Health commissioner to liaise with the office of the Secretary to the state government with regard to other intervention requests they have.
