Celebrating International Women’s Day the French way

Alliance française Lagos has held two events to celebrate International Women’s Day. Held on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10, the first was a special film screening and the second a panel discussion. The film, Aya de Youpougon an adaptation of the book series of the dame title was with e-presence of Marguerite Abouet at Bogobiri House in Lagos.

The film based on a series of six bande dessinée albums written by Marguerite Abouet and drawn by Clément Oubrerie were originally published by Gallimard between 2005 and 2010. All six volumes have been translated into English by Drawn & Quarterly.

Although not entirely autobiographical, the story is based on the author’s life in Côte d’Ivoire. All three of the books in the series haven been illustrated by the author’s husband, Clément Oubrerie. It has been adapted into an animated film in 2012 by the same authors.

The next day there was a Panel-discussion and closing cocktail at Terra Kulture with the theme: ‘Women in the move, in Nigeria and beyond: feminism or feminisms?’ It was to feature Molara Wood (writer), Ngozi Iwere (activist), Georgina Duke (editor), and moderated by Sara Panata (PhD in African History).
