Court refuses Nnamdi Kanu bail

-

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has again refused bail to the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and three others, on the grounds that the offence for which they are standing trial are serious and not entirely bailable.

Justice Binta Nyako said that in the alternative, she would order an accelerated hearing to determine the fate of the defendants which should commence not later than two months from now.

According to her, while contrary to the claims of the defendants, all of the offences for which they are standing trial are not bailable because some of them carry sentences of life imprisonment if the defendants are found guilty.

She also deflated the claims by the accused persons that the alleged statement by President Muhammadu Buhari in a media chat sometime in the past would have any effect on the defendants fate.

She explained that cases are decided based on laws and facts and not interviews granted to the media.

She also dismissed the submission of the prosecution that an earlier court had refused bail as such the court should do same.
