Driver who killed Festus Iyayi jailed for seven years

Danladi Baba, who drove recklessly and killed former Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President, Festus Iyayi, on the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway has been sentenced to seven years in prison without an option of fine.

Chief Magistrate U. Hussain, who gave the judgment in Lokoja, lamented recklessness on the roads and cautioned road users on the position of the law over dangerous driving and other acts of lawlessness.

Iyayi, winner of the Commonwealth Prize for Literature, who was born in 1947 in Ugbegwu, Edo State, was killed in a motor accident on his way to the national executive meeting of ASUU in the company of Anthony Monye-Emina and two others in continuation of a negotiation with the federal government.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said  Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, applauded the judiciary for ensuring that families of victims of road crashes get justice.

Oyeyemi assured the public that errant drivers will face sanctions and urged drivers to abide by the law and desist from any act that will cause death on the roads.
