Udoh, prior to the match, had suffered a bout of malaria and looked way off appropriate fitness.

A huge doubt for the game, Udoh said he had to acquiesce in the face of pleadings.

He admitted that he could not give his best in the match, as the ailment drained him a lot.

He also stated that he decided to pull on the Enyimba shirt to play not because of financial incentive but for team and personal glory as well as for the travelling fans of the club.

He said: “Honestly, I nearly missed the match. It was not easy because I was down with malaria and I wasn’t in good shape for the game.

“But I had to be prevailed over to play. At the same time, I had to just play under my condition for the sake of the fans, especially our fans who came all the way from Aba.

“I must admit I was not in the best of shape for the game and even struggled a lot. But I’m happy and thankful to God that we won the Cup, and I even scored.

“It would have been heart-breaking for us and the fans if we didn’t win it.”

Udoh added that helping Enyimba to win the Federation Cup is one of his happiest moments in the 2013/14 season apart from scoring a record 23 goals in the Glo Premier League.
