The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) over the weekend stated its readiness to boost the acceptability of Nigeria’s products in the international market through accurate measurement standards.
Mr Obiora Manafa, Director, Metrology and Instruments of SON said this during the celebration of World Metrology Day in Lagos.
He stated that the conformity to global best practices in standard measurement would eliminate the rejection of the country’s products and boost volume of its bilateral trade with other countries.
Manafa explained; “Measurement is life. If we do not measure accurately people will die in the hospital, aircraft will crash, people will be short changed in the market. Meterology cuts across every part of our lives and every sector of the economy.”
He stressed that the agency through its National Metrology Institute (NMI) would ensure the elimination of incidence of inaccurate measures in trade, manufacturing, export and import activities in the country.
He maintained that accredited testing and calibration laboratories would obtain traceability of measurement locally and save the foreign exchange paid to foreign NMIs.
Dr Shaukat Malik, a United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) representative said that quality and measurement was important to the acceptability of products worldwide.
He noted that accurate measurement would enhance global competitiveness of the country’s products and services, saying that UNIDO’s commitment to support the country’s industrial growth and development.
Alhaji Gbadamosi, Managing Director, IMC Ltd., said that meterology removes chaos, provides structure, saves money, time and life, adding that accurate measurement improves productivity while boosting customers’ satisfaction in the product or service.
