Yobe monarch dispels rumour, flags off polio vaccination

Emir of Fika and the Chairman, Yobe State Council of Chiefs, Dr. Muhammad Ibn Abali Muhammad Idrissa, has dispelled the rumour in the state that children were being vaccinated on their head and abdomen in the schools.
He explained that what was going on was immunization of children against polio virus and other forms of viral infections, while urging them to embrace the government programme.
The rumour began in some primary schools in Damaturu, which led to the closure of some schools, recently.
The monarch spoke while kicking off the Polio Vaccine Immunization programme at his Palace.
He said, “The immunization on the head and abdomen to children being widely circulated is completely untrue. It was fabricated by those who want to bring set back to government”.
Also, the Chairman of Potiskum Local Government Area, Muhammad Musa Potiskum, commended the traditional rulers in the area for assisting in mobilizing their subjects on the importance of the immunization exercise.
He told the monarchs: “As a result of your intervention, people are now complying with the programme. We will always partner you in delivering democracy dividend”.

Contributing, the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mr. Gizachew praised the Emir for dispelling the rumour.
“Your intervention has controlled the rejection problems. In June 2017, we were able to vaccinate 77,000 and after the rumour we vaccinated 62,807. We lost 13,502, respectively”.
The Coordinator of the Primary Health Care Department, Usman Gimb,a condemned the rumour and assured to mobilize more people to bring out their children for polio vaccine.
