Athletes hunt for Africa Championship places with classic performance

Ajayi pulled clear of the field, running a new Personal Best of 10.26s to emerge with a win ahead of Idjesa Uruemu and Nicholas Fakorede in 100m race.

Day one of the 2nd Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) All Comers Competition came alive at Yaba Tech sports centre with athletes showing classic feats for places in the Mauricius Africa Championship team

The athletics event witnessed by spectators featured speed man Kanyinsola Ajayi who stunned all the favourites in men’s 100m Final A running the race of his life to secure victory.

Ajayi ran clear of the field, with a new Personal Best of 10.26s to emerge with a win ahead of Idjesa Uruemu and Nicholas Fakorede.

Another veteran athlete Ogho-Oghene Egwero competed in other competition in men’s 100m final B, almost sneaking in, but Seye Ogunlewe caught him on the line to nick the race in a time of 10.27s. Egwero settled for 2nd place in a Season’s Best of 10.28s just ahead of Musa Nurain and Efe Sam Agalive.

It was fireworks all the way in the women’s 100m event in the three women’s 100m finals, Tima Godbless accelerated past the field in final A, getting to the line way ahead of the chasing pack in a time of 11.53s. Praise Oforku made a late surge past Iyanuoluwa Bada to snatch second place.
In the 400m event heat 6 Samson Nathaniel remains efficient in the men’s 400 metres, maintaining a body coordination from the start to the finishing line in a time of 46.06 secs.


He would be the athlete to watch in the finals if the second day of the event.


More refreshing was the enthusiasm and commitment athletes go about their events .
For instance, 40 aspiring long jumpers showed up for the event and would have overwhelmed officials but wisdom was prevailed as the athletes were screened to manageable size for today’s finals.
Day 1 one of the competition featured 100m, finals, men and women, 400m men and women, high jump, women, javelin, shot put, 10000m men,
1500m men and women etc.


Today’s event would feature long jump men and women finals, 200m, 4×100m finals.
Among degnitatries that watched the Day 1 event were the AFN president Chief Tonobok Okowa, former AFN boss Dr. Solomon Ogba, Chairman Edo State sports commission Yusuf Ali and others.
Today’s event at Yaba Tech sports centre promises to be revealing as talents would be on display for selection for the Africa Senor Athletics Championship in Mauricius in June.
