Buhari, by the end of 2021, had gallivanted 131 times to 37 countries where he spent 312 days, building on a tally by Daily Trust

President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled his planned two weeks medical leave to London and returned to Nigeria after two days in Kenya.

Buhari had been attending the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) at 50 in Nairobi and was scheduled to see his London doctors afterwards, only to cancel the appointment.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, no reason has been given for Buhari’s unplanned detour.

On March 1, TheNiche reported that Buhari would desert his job, first jetting off to Kenya for four days, then to the United Kingdom “for a maximum of two weeks”, his fifth overseas travel this year alone – three of them amid fuel scarcity gripping Nigeria.

The report added that by the end of 2021, Buhari had gallivanted 131 times to 37 countries where he spent 312 days, building on a tally by Daily Trust in an editorial on 10 December 2021 which still echoes widespread criticism of his wasteful travels.

While in Kenya, the president participated in the Special Session to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United Nation’s body.

Buhari said: “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNEP’s existence, we laud the efforts of UNEP and encourage broader action to overcome climate change, biodiversity, rising levels of pollution and waste being three major crises threatening our planet.

The president also met with Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Nairobi.

During the meeting, Mr Buhari directed collaboration between the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development and Power to combat desertification.
