Geng Quangrong, 47, a Chinese who lives in Kano, has confessed to killing his Nigerian lover, Ummu Kulthum, because she reneged on her promise to marry him after he had spent huge sums of money on her in a long running affair.

Police disclosed Quangrong made the confession after he was arrested on 16 September for stabbing Kulthum to death in her home. She was aged 23.

State Police Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Kiyawa said Quangrong invaded Kulthum’s home after scaling the fence to gain access and repeatedly stabbed her until she died.

Quangrong alleged she promised to marry him but later reneged on the promise after he had spent a lot of money on her.

He claimed he was angered by her deceit and decided to attack and kill her at her residence.

The suspect has been transferred to state police headquarters in Bompai for further investigation and prosecution.

Kulthum was buried on 17 September.

Long running affair

Kulthum’s neighbour Abubakar Mustapha disclosed she was a divorcee and Quangrong was her boyfriend.

“The incident happened around 10:00 pm [on Friday] night. The murderer was her boyfriend since before she got married. Her husband divorced her and they went on with their friendship as boyfriend and girlfriend,” Mustapha said, per The Nation.

“He often went to her house. [After the attack] she was taken to UMC Zhair Hospital not more than a kilometre away from her house and she died.

“Khaleed her brother stopped the mob from attacking the murderer when he came back for his car when he entered the house because he [Khaleed] thought that would lead to a different thing. The man was then caught and handed over to the police.”

Muhammad Sani, another neighbour, disclosed Quangrong once attempted to kill himself because of Kulthum.

“When she was about to get married, he once attempted suicide because of his love for her until the police intervened and everything was settled,” Sani recounted.
