Davido says Afrobeats has evolved into multi-billion dollar business

Davido also claimed Afrobeats singers are not only making millions of dollars but positivity affecting their communities

Nigerian singer and record label owner, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has reflected on the evolution of Afrobeats genre since he joined the music industry 13 years ago. 

According to the ‘Electricity’ crooner, the African music scene has developed far better than it was when he joined the industry.

Davido, who recently covered the first-ever edition of the Native Now Magazine, also noted that Afrobeats has grown from a poorly-funded industry to a multi-billion dollar industry.

He went on to say Afrobeats singers are not only making millions of dollars now, but are positively affecting their communities and changing lives.

Speaking on the evolution of genre, Davido said, “Afrobeats now and then is different, it’s a multi-billion dollar industry.

“You can’t compare it to years ago when we were just faffing around.

“We were making amazing music and a lot of money but now people are changing communities, changing lives.”

Davido was born in Atlanta, Georgia, United States on November 21, 1992, but was raised in Lagos, Nigeria. 

He made his music debut as a member of the group KB International but rose to fame after releasing ‘Dami Duro’, the second single from his debut studio album ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ in 2012.

Between 2013 and 2015, he released several hit singles such as Gobe, One of a Kind, Skelewu, Aye, Tchelete (Goodlife), Naughty, Owo Ni Koko, The Sound and The Money.

In 2019, he was listed as one of the 100 most-influential Africans by New African magazine and on March 31, 2023, he released, his fourth studio album. ‘Timeless’.
