Jemiriye showcases African culture at Festival International FIGAS in Dakar

The African version of the Festival International (FIGAS) was held in Dakar Senegal between the 9th to 14th of May, 2022, featuring Nigerian singer, Jemiriye Adeniji, and a host of other top African female artistes selected from more than 17 African countries and the rest of the world.

The music festival was organised to celebrate women and was graced by several women artistes, cultural actresses, and female entreprenuers from the creative and cultural world around the globe.

It was a platform for the dissemination and expression of the diversity of the world’s cultures, and Jemiriye’s Foundation EWA Global Initiative a 501(c)3 Non-profit/Non-Governmental Organization in partnership with Afrik’Consult Culture’s Women Project (WO.P) seized the opportunity to empower African women and girls by exploring their creativity during the week-long event. 

The African cultural ambassador was also a Guest Artist in Residence at the festival, where she awarded the WOP artistes the EWA Global Initiative Women/Girls Creative Fund, which was aimed at empowering them and supporting their music and creative pursuits. 

Jemiriye also spoke with and trained 10 women artistes selected from different African countries in Music Artistic Communication and Performance Direction during the festival.

The glamorous event also featured a world-class music showcase, where Jemiriye alongside the Senegal National Orchestra and other top African female music artistes including, Coumbis Sorra (Senegal), Chadia (Senegal), and Nina Wateko (Congo) serenaded the world with the best display of music from Africa in preparation for the 6th edition of Festival International FIGAS which is expected to take place between 22nd to 24th of July 2022 at the Jorge Semprum Space in Blois en, France. 

The Showcase PLURI’ELLES show which took place at the Grand National Theater, Doudou Rose de Dakar, Senegal on the 14th of May, 2022, was a masterpiece. 

Jemiriye performed some of her hit songs like Iba, Ise Oluwa, African Lady, and Lagos with the Senegal National Orchestra under the artistic direction of Fredy Massamba. 

The Nigerian also shared the stage with WOP artistes, the Jigeen Ni Orchestra, an all-female orchestra, after which she also had other outstanding performances with Matibeye from Chad Republic, Koudy Fagbemi from Benin Republic, and Tyrane from Cote d’Ivoire.

At the end of the event, TheNiche newspaper asked Jemiriye to describe her experience during the festival, and she characterised it as an exhilarating one, noting that it was an honour to have performed with different African female bands.  

“My experience in Senegal was very exhilarating. Performing at the Grand Théâtre Doudou Ndiaye Rose with an all female band, Orchestra Jigeen Ni, WOP D’Afriq, and the Senegal National Orchestra was nothing short of remarkable. 

“I love the Senegal cuisines, Thiebudje especially. and the people are super warm and friendly.

“I can’t wait to share my album project with you all, as some of the songs on the album were performed at the festival,” she said. 

Jemiriye, is a nugget of Nigerian music, a singer-songwriter who lives and performs in the United States. A country in which she has spread her exceptional Afropop style. 

She is also widely travelled, performing in particular in Europe and America, where she gave a stellar performance during the 90th birthday of the matriarch of the Martin Luther King Jr. family, Naomi Barbara King, and picked up an award for Outstanding International Artist, at the AD King Foundation’s 10th Annual Youth Empowerment Award Gala in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jemiriye is set to launch her eagerly anticipated album titled ‘Rare Jem’ in May 2022. The album which comprises different heart-warming, Afrocentric, and dancehall tracks will be released to the public by the end of May 2022 and it promises to be an indispensable Album.
