The late police officer, who hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State, reportedly slumped and died in his office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday.

As head of the powerful Criminal Investigations Department of the Nigeria Police, Egbunike headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations.

He was widely criticised for giving the disgraced Abba Kyari a slap on the palm for only reportedly recommending a demotion.

Had Kyari not been implicated in drug related crime for which he is standing trial now with six others, he would probably have been back to the police to continue with his alleged criminal escapades.

Before he was appointed DIG in late 2020, Joseph Egbunike had worked for several years as the head of the police finance department.

It is not yet clear what the cause of death is but police sources told TheNiche that he had been ailing from an undisclosed sickness.
