Political activist, Deji Adeyanju, has warned about the danger of fielding a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the next presidential election, saying it will crack Nigeria’s fault lines further.

There have been speculations that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a Muslim, may be considering picking another Muslim from the North as runningmate as a way of harvesting the core northern votes.

If Tinubu chooses a Muslim as running mate, Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has argued that it will be that he is prioritizing competence over religion. El-Rufai made the remark yesterday during a Channels Television programme, Politics Today.

A former special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on social media, Bashir Ahmad, also encouraged Tinubu to focus on competence than religion in his choice of running mate.

He said via a tweet today: “Dear Asiwaju, what matter the most is the competency of the person you are going to choose as your deputy, if he/she is a Nigerian with the capacity to help you achieve your great plans for this country, I am sure majority won’t bother whether he/she is a Christian or Muslim.”

But Adeyanju warned that a Muslim-Muslim ticket will narrow the election to a religious affair and further divide Nigeruans.

He said:”Picking a Muslim-Muslim will make the 2023 election about religion and that will be the worst thing APC can do to Nigeria. They have already divided us enough in the last 7yrs. Everyone need to be represented in the room when decisions are made about this country.”
