A presidential aspirant Peter Obi has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obi, a former Anambras State Governor, was until his resignation one of the 15 aspirants vying for the presidential ticket of the PDP.
The letter conveying his resignation from the party, which was dated Tuesday, May 24, was submitted to the National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, on Wednesday, May 25.

His resignation came barely 72 hours before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention.
He explained that he took the decision to leave the party because of his firm commitment to rescuing Nigeria, even if the route differs.
Although Obi said it was a great honour to contribute to nation-building efforts through PDP, he lamented that the recent developments within the PDP have made it practically impossible for him to continue participating and making such constructive contributions.
According to him, the nation’s challenges are deep-seated and require profound sacrifices towards rescuing the country.
The presidential aspirant informed the PDP chairman that he has since conveyed his resignation and withdrawal from the primary to the Chairman of Agulu Ward 2, his ward in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Peter Obi created the image of a prudent and honest manager and has reinforced it in multiple ways and moments. His public actions and style are fiercely aligned to his message. There is little dissonance, hence he is credible.
Nigerians on Twitter have tipped him as the favourite presidential hopeful to replace President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Villa next year May.
Peter Obi has been very visible in his State wide consultations and interactions with the PDP delegates and stakeholders.
In his meeting with the council of Anambra traditional rulers and presidents-general of the 177 communities in the state to inform them of his intention to run for the presidency, he was emphatic that his aspiration was essentially to fix the country that is currently broken in many respects.
For emphasis, he stated; “I am not contesting because I want a political appointment but to serve this country and unite Nigeria. I am the only person that can unite Nigeria.”
