Seychelles, Africa’s smallest country on the east coast with 98,462 population, is also the least corrupt, scoring 70 points to rank 23rd in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2021 compiled by Transparency International (TI).

Neighbouring countries Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana, and Tanzania all rose to the top of the least corrupt countries in Africa.

CPI is a score-based system that “ranks 180 countries and territories around the world by their perceived levels of public sector corruption. The results are given on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean),” TI explained.

Nigeria dropped further down the CPI to rank 154th out of 180 countries, reflecting the historic treasury looting on the watch of Muhammadu Buhari.

TI said Nigeria dropped five places compared with 2020 CPI. It scored 24 out of 100 points in 2021, falling back one point against 2020.

Nigeria’s slide to 154th in 2021 makes it the second most corrupt country in West Africa.

TI said Nigeria’s was downgraded because of the following factors, among others:

  • More than 100 Nigerians were exposed in the Pandora Papers as having used anonymous companies to buy properties worth £350 million in the United Kingdom alone.
  • Secretive dealings of the country’s powerholders were previously reported in the Panama Papers and FinCEN Files investigations.
  • Inaction over past and current disclosures of graft creates a sense of impunity, stalling anti-corruption progress in Nigeria.
