Wizkid, others fail to win at 2022 Grammy Awards, Nigerians react

Wizkid lost to Arooj Aftab in the Best Global Music Performance and Angelique Kidjo grabbed the Best Global Music Album

Nigerian singers, Wizkid, Tems, Burna Boy, Femi Kuti, and son, Made Kuti have all failed to pick up an award at the 64th edition of the Grammy Awards held at the MGM Arena, Las Vegas in the United States.

Five Nigerian singers were nominated in two categories, while Wizkid had two nominations, Burna Boy, Tems, Femi, and Made Kuti had one each.

Wizkid was nominated alongside fellow Nigerians –Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, and Tems for Best Global Music Performance at The Grammys, alongside 61-year-old Angelique Kidjo

The Nigerian Afrobeat star, Wizkid also had his ‘Made In Lagos’ album nominated for Best Global Music Album alongside Femi Kuti and Made Kuti’s ‘Legacy +’, Angelique Kidjo’s ‘Mother Nature’ and Rocky Dawumi’s ‘Voice of Bunbon Volume’. 

At a televised event, the Nigerian musicians lost out in the two categories, while they lost to Arooj Aftab’s single ‘Mohabbat’ in the Best Global Music Performance. 

Beninese legend, Angelique Kidjo grabbed the Best Global Music Album with her album titled, Mother Nature.

During her acceptance speech, Kidjo appreciated young Africans that have continued to collaborate with her to promote the continent to the world.

In 2021, Wizkid got his first Grammy award after featuring in Beyonce’s song, ‘Brown Skin Girl,’ while Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category after losing out in 2020

Meanwhile, mixed reactions have trailed the inability of Nigerian musicians to win at the Grammy Awards, with Wizkid getting bashed the most on social media. 

Some netizens mocked him for losing to the veteran Angela Kidjo, while others concluded that he was robbed.
